MaCray was born and raised in the small town of Critz, VA. At a very young age he developed an interest in cosmetology. He became fascinated with brushing and styling his younger sister’s Barbie Doll’s hair. He grew to love hair and fashion, but he felt like he needed to find a career that his family and friends would approve of. Although he was passionate about hair, he went on to pursue being a history teacher after graduating high school. After two years, he decided that he needed to be true to himself and his passions. He anxiously revealed to his mother he wanted to become a hairstylist. To his surprise, she was extremely supportive and told him, “We don’t care what you do, as long as you are happy.” MaCray took a leap of faith, and enrolled in cosmetology school in Martinsville, VA at Miracle University in 1997, and never looked back.

He thrived in school and loved being able to totally transform a client’s style, while making them look and feel their best. He graduated in less than a year, and vowed to continue challenging himself and his skill set. In 1998, MaCray went to The Bronner Bros Hair Show and dreamed of participating in the “Hair Battle Royale.” He loved the energy the crowd had, and the idea of performing in front of others on stage.

In 2009, MaCray received his instructor's license to teach new cosmetology students. Determined to perfect his craft and continue to grow as a hairstylist, in 2010, MaCray attended The Sassoon Academy in Chicago for advanced training in cutting and hair color. After visiting the windy city, MaCray knew he wanted to experience “city living” and a faster lifestyle. He pursued his dreams of moving from his small hometown, and relocated to Chicago in 2010. He started working at an upscale salon in the West Loop Chicago, and worked with Ford Models, Jill Scott, and Christina Milian.

Although MaCray loved living in a big city, he started to miss his friends in family back home, and the “small town Southern charm” he grew up with.  Before he could make plans to move back another one of his dreams came true! The former NBC Universal channel Style network came to the windy city to film a docu-series "Chicagolicious"  Becoming a cast member on the show allowed so many of his dreams and aspirations to become reality. Being shown in other countries and becoming an international figure! After filming the show he moved to Greensboro, NC and began to work at Boho Salon, voted the number one salon in the Triad. He focused on offering a wide range of extension services, hair color, cutting, men’s grooming, and custom wigs.

In 2013, MaCray achieved his dream of competing in the Bronner Brothers “The Hair Battle Royale.” He has been featured on various television shows, CNN, and even featured on the chelsea handler show! With his distinctive voice and witty catch phrases no wonder The North Carolina A&T radio station 90.1 reached out and needed the “MaCrayway” tips of the week, and offering advice for viewers on hair and fashion trends and how to care for their hair. He coordinated and put on many fashion shows for several charities, and was a premiere stylist for Greensboro Fashion Week.

As much as MaCray enjoyed being home, he shortly began to plan his next adventure: the West Coast. Not one to shy away from a challenge and his personal motto is "Step out on faith!" he decided that he wanted to explore California and the endless possibilities of a new journey. Be sure to catch MaCray on the WETV's hit show "L.A. Hair" working along side Kim Kimble!
